ABOUT ME

What's My Story?

My name is Peggy Kayne and I have been training immigrant professionals to speak clearly since 1990.

I left my secure job at the school board to create a real speaking solution for the immigrants I met who could not get into their professional jobs.

I was inspired to offer pronunciation training when an immigrant employee working at a Mr. Lube shop could not speak in a way I could understand him.

He looked professional and was good at his job, but I had to ask “Pardon me?” “Say that again,” “Please repeat that” several times so he could tell me what he needed for my car’s oil change steps.

As I went to pay my bill I thought, “I could really help this man with his pronunciation!”

And many hundreds of clients later, my students are proof that I truly can “Teach immigrants how to talk Canadian English.

Learn the essential tongue positions and easy exercises to build facial muscles.

  • Learn to use your tongue in the English way. When you say “ee”, the tongue presses upward and between the top teeth. The pressure point is on the front two molars. When you say “eh” the jaw opens slightly, the vowel changes. When you say “a” as in hat, the jaw opens much more.
  • Identify the differences in position and sounds: “ee”, “eh” and “a” “ee” as in “me” “eh’’ as in “met” “a” as in “mat”
  • Notice how English uses different muscles to pronounce sounds than in your language. And the tongue stays in the “hill” position to create these English sounds.
  • Learn how to do the quick, quick, slow rhythm in prepositional phrases. The subject word will be longer and higher.
  • Begin correcting consonant sounds. “E” and “R” are close cousins, “E” is high and “R” is low in the throat. “Th” has 2 sounds, one voiced like “the” and “those” and voiceless blowing like “thing” and “three”. “T” is a voiceless sound just spitting out a puff of air like “two”. “D” does the same action but has a low voice in the throat that turns “two” into “do”.
  • Begin using the up and down vocal patterns of English speech starting with short phrases in sentences. “The boy ran in the street”.
  • Picture words like “boy, ran and street” are stressed and long while “the” and “in the” are fast and quick. The bolded words are three (3) beats long while the rest are one (1) beat long. “The boy ran in the street”. (1 3 3 1 1 3)

Add fluency to your accuracy skills.

  • Practice and apply what you learned in Level 1 with different vowels and consonant sounds which will be taught in this Level 2. Many of the techniques that have been learned already can be modified to work with new sounds as guided in the lessons.
  • While some sounds may require a little more attention to getting it right, most of the sounds should still be familiar. The accompanying Audio files are very helpful and will extend your vocabulary and listening skills, assisting you to speak with more accurate sounds and more interesting words.
  • Learn to break run-on sentences into meaningful phrases and speak more effectively. Apply the skills you’ve learned with other sounds to create new words and meaning.
  • Hear and speak common greetings like “How do you do?” to sound like ‘HAH.dee.oo.DO?’ Learn the rhythm and sound patterns. Practice consonant sounds and sound blends until they become easy and accurate.
  • Write and record a telephone message. Later, record the two versions for accuracy.
  • Learn how to link consonants to consonants and consonants to vowels.
  • Practice building a house, refer to page 130. Make sure to stress the nouns and verbs, to make a clear story.
  • Hear and copy rhythms that change the meaning of sentences. Refer to page 131.

Continue to apply linking and grouping to dialogues and short readings and technical articles.

  • Participants will list and send in words and phrases that they are having difficulty with. This will be reviewed and addressed in class. Difficult sounds, word stress patterns, “ed” endings, and “stop and go” consonants will also be addressed as needed.
  • The instructor will address new material to support student learning. Develop listening and self-correcting skills.
  • New lessons from the textbook will be introduced each week. Self-assess progress by recording short passages, listening to recorded selections and reading out loud with them to match your reading speed and pronunciation with the person speaking.
  • Develop a slower professional, Canadian pace of speech – the ‘power’ pace.
  • Listening to recorded selections and read out loud with them to entrain your reading speed with north American voices.
  • Practice conversations, phone calls, and face to face meeting skills. Record yourself and assess your techniques.
  • You will feel more comfortable and speak more clearly while presenting information.

This depends on how much you practice the simple exercises.  The courses are planned for weekly lessons for 10 or 12 weeks.

How do you know what level i am at?
